Genetic counseling and testing in Dubai
Some couples need to know whether a genetic condition runs in the family, whether repeated losses have a chromosomal cause, or whether their embryos can be tested before transfer. Dr. Shami answers those questions with counselling first and testing only where it changes the plan.

The tests, in plain words
Carrier screening is a blood test that checks whether you or your partner silently carry a recessive condition. If you both carry the same one, there is a one-in-four chance in each pregnancy, and PGT-M becomes an option.
Karyotype looks at the number and structure of your chromosomes. A balanced rearrangement in one partner is a known cause of repeated miscarriage and is easy to miss without this test.
Exome sequencing reads the protein-coding part of your DNA. It is reserved for specific situations, usually a suspected inherited condition that simpler tests have not explained.
PGT-A tests embryos created by IVF for the right number of chromosomes before one is transferred. PGT-M tests embryos for one specific inherited condition that the couple carries. Both need an IVF cycle; see IVF and ICSI.
Testing is done in the clinic's own genetics laboratory, First Genomix, so samples are not sent abroad and results are discussed with you by the doctor who ordered them.

Questions patients ask
Is PGT-A right for everyone doing IVF?
No. It is most useful when age or history makes chromosomal errors more likely, or after repeated implantation failure. Dr. Shami will tell you whether it is likely to help in your case rather than recommending it by default.
Does testing an embryo harm it?
A few cells are taken from the outer layer of a day-5 embryo by an experienced embryologist. Dr. Shami will discuss the small risks involved with you before you decide.
How long do results take?
Blood-based tests such as carrier screening and karyotype take a few weeks. Embryo testing results are usually available in time to plan a frozen transfer. Exact timing is confirmed by the laboratory.
